Thomas and Jasper had just finished unloading his truck with the supplies when Melanie and Brittney stopped by.
âIs mom ok? She left in a hurry.â Melanie asked Thomas.
âYes, sheâs ok. Wyatt and Molly broke up, and he called her upset. She went to check on him.â
âOh, ok, I hope heâs ok. I know breaking up is difficult,â Melanie said.
âThe first heartbreak is always the worst,â Brittney said.
âYes, it is, and he already has so much going on. But Iâm confident that Mary Elle will help him feel better. She has a way with people,â Thomas said.
âIsnât that the truth,â Melanie said with a laugh.
âLet me help you,â Brittney said to Jasper as she saw him struggling to carry too many things at once.
âLong time no talk,â Brittney said once they were alone in the barn.
âItâs been a busy morning,â Jasper said as he began to put things away.
âHow was the date?â
âIt was great. Kathy, my date, was very nice, and we talked about animals most of the night,â Jasper said as he walked toward the barn, and Brittney followed him.
âThatâs great. Sheâs an animal lover like you. Are you going to have a second date?â
âI havenât called her after last nightâs date. Iâve been busy with work.â
âYou didnât call her or text her today?â
âNope, not yet.â
âDid you like her at all?â
âSheâs very attractive, and we like animals, but I donât think we have anything else in common. I donât think I would want to go on a second date.â
Brittney didnât know why, but hearing Jasper say that sped her heart up.
âIâll check the app to see if there are any other matches,â Britney said as she rolled her eyes. She never understood why men were so disconnected from their feelings.
âI canât go on dates tonight or tomorrow,â Jasper said in a serious tone.
âOh, why not?â Brittney asked. She hoped she wasnât being too pushy and annoying him.
âIâm helping David at the sanctuary. He wants to have the grand opening soon.â
âOh, yes, Melanie asked me to include a small article about his sanctuary to help him get the animals adopted and maybe some vendor sponsorships.â
âThat would be awesome. David has spent almost all his life savings on the sanctuary. He bought the land and built the barn, and heâs paying for all the food, medication, and supplies to keep it running.â
âI know. Melanie told me about it. Heâs got a big heart.â
âHe does. Some of the animals are severely sick or need long-term care, and heâs there helping them. Itâs not an easy task.â
âI didnât know some animals needed long-term care. I just thought they would heal.â
âSome animals get diabetes, renal failure, kidney stones, just like humans. Some need surgery or casts or IVs. Heâs lucky to have Lindsay helping him too. Sheâs from Winding Creek, but she comes once a month to check on the animals to make sure everyone is ok.â
âThatâs great. What if thereâs an emergency?â
âShe would come, or David could take the animals to her.â
âRight, that makes sense.
