Thomas and Jasper had just finished unloading his truck with the supplies when Melanie and Brittney stopped by.

“Is mom ok? She left in a hurry.” Melanie asked Thomas.

“Yes, she’s ok. Wyatt and Molly broke up, and he called her upset. She went to check on him.”

“Oh, ok, I hope he’s ok. I know breaking up is difficult,” Melanie said.

“The first heartbreak is always the worst,” Brittney said.

“Yes, it is, and he already has so much going on. But I’m confident that Mary Elle will help him feel better. She has a way with people,” Thomas said.

“Isn’t that the truth,” Melanie said with a laugh.

“Let me help you,” Brittney said to Jasper as she saw him struggling to carry too many things at once.

“Long time no talk,” Brittney said once they were alone in the barn.

“It’s been a busy morning,” Jasper said as he began to put things away.

“How was the date?”

“It was great. Kathy, my date, was very nice, and we talked about animals most of the night,” Jasper said as he walked toward the barn, and Brittney followed him.

“That’s great. She’s an animal lover like you. Are you going to have a second date?”

“I haven’t called her after last night’s date. I’ve been busy with work.”

“You didn’t call her or text her today?”

“Nope, not yet.”

“Did you like her at all?”

“She’s very attractive, and we like animals, but I don’t think we have anything else in common. I don’t think I would want to go on a second date.”

Brittney didn’t know why, but hearing Jasper say that sped her heart up.

“I’ll check the app to see if there are any other matches,” Britney said as she rolled her eyes. She never understood why men were so disconnected from their feelings.

“I can’t go on dates tonight or tomorrow,” Jasper said in a serious tone.

“Oh, why not?” Brittney asked. She hoped she wasn’t being too pushy and annoying him.

“I’m helping David at the sanctuary. He wants to have the grand opening soon.”

“Oh, yes, Melanie asked me to include a small article about his sanctuary to help him get the animals adopted and maybe some vendor sponsorships.”

“That would be awesome. David has spent almost all his life savings on the sanctuary. He bought the land and built the barn, and he’s paying for all the food, medication, and supplies to keep it running.”

“I know. Melanie told me about it. He’s got a big heart.”

“He does. Some of the animals are severely sick or need long-term care, and he’s there helping them. It’s not an easy task.”

“I didn’t know some animals needed long-term care. I just thought they would heal.”

“Some animals get diabetes, renal failure, kidney stones, just like humans. Some need surgery or casts or IVs. He’s lucky to have Lindsay helping him too. She’s from Winding Creek, but she comes once a month to check on the animals to make sure everyone is ok.”

“That’s great. What if there’s an emergency?”

“She would come, or David could take the animals to her.”

“Right, that makes sense.
